    Happy Friday!!!

The Scenario – Few things happen spontaneously or overnight. Much of what we do requires preparation, patience and persistence. Like building a bridge across a canyon, you can’t get to the other side safely until you’ve paved the way from your starting point.

How do we maximize job satisfaction before beginning a career?

Dr. Bill Knaus, Ed.D., co-author of Fearless Job Hunting, suggests a career study to seek and find a suitable career centered on a “Career Preference Profile.” Assess your work preferences according to the following five points to determine what career best suits you and will bring you the most satisfaction:

    1.     Identify the type of work that you find the most meaningful.

    2.     Identify the roles that best suit your abilities according to your performance within those roles.

    3.     Determine the aspects of a career that you find the most significant.

    4.     Evaluate your general attitude in a work environment.

    5.      Honestly assess the optimum amount of responsibility you can handle.

    Posted by Sheba

Thank you so much for your interest in The Insight, by Sheba. I hope you enjoyed this week’s blogs about “Increase Job Satisfaction.”

Next week’s topic will be “Increase Life Satisfaction.”

    Friday Review: Happy Reading!

    1.     Do You Praise Yourself?

    • You know that you are satisfied with your job when your roles, influences and challenges leave you with pleasurable or positive emotions. However, pay close attention to your personal attitude toward yourself in reference to your role in the company and the challenges with which you are presented. Be sure to take time to praise and celebrate your own accomplishments by highlighting your strengths and attributes.  Increasing personal appraisal can also increase job satisfaction.

     2.     Attitude is Everything.

    • Your personal sense of satisfaction in the workplace is entirely dependent upon your personal attitude, attention to detail to your core self-evaluation and worth ethic.  Put your best self forward.

     3.     A Support System.

    • The support of authority figures within the workplace magnifies the sense of satisfaction employees perceive. Seek or create an environment of mutual support within your workplace to achieve or promote job satisfaction for yourself and others.

     4.     Pave the Way.

    • You know yourself best. Identify your personal strengths, weaknesses, and preferences when seeking the best career for you. Pave your own way to success by finding the occupation that suits your needs.

The Insight – We are ultimately in charge of achieving satisfaction in our careers. Consider what influences the sense of satisfaction you gain from your job. Think about what you might do to personally improve the amount of enjoyment and gratification you experience. Assess what you value most in a career and what your ideal job looks like when pursuing a career. Maintain a positive attitude, but also seek a work environment in which you have the support of your co-workers and authorities.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  • Satisfaction at Work…Where is Your Support System?

    Posted by Sheba

The Scenario – You had an insurmountable task ahead of you and didn’t know how to tackle it. Everyone else was busy and you didn’t want to admit that you couldn’t handle it. However, when you reached out for help from your superior, he or she gave you the extra help you needed and just having their support changed your perception of the task.

Does the level of support you receive from superiors affect your outlook?

A study based on the social exchange theory’s norm of reciprocity, conducted by Professors Robert Eisenberger, Ph.D., Jim Cummings, Stephen Armeli, Ph.D., and Patrick Lynch, Ph.D., at the University of Delaware, found that job conditions are less significant to employees than the level of support they perceive from their superiors within the organization.

This finding falls directly in line with the social exchange theory, developed by social anthropologist Sir James Frazer. The theory suggests that human interaction relies upon the exchange of social, emotional or material resources, such as praise, monetary compensation or emotional support. The primary objective is to maximize reward and reduce punishment.

    1.     Employees perform the given task with adequate efficiency in anticipation of reward

    2.     Employer offers praise and approval of the employees’ efforts or products

    3.     Employees’ needs and expectations for social acceptance are met, and they feel supported by their organization

    4.     Employees are now inclined to continue to perform well

The Insight – The support of authority figures within the workplace magnifies the sense of satisfaction employees perceive. Seek or create an environment of mutual support within your workplace to achieve or promote job satisfaction for yourself and others.

Where does your support come from?

The Scenario Getting fitted for a suit or dress can be tricky. You need the right length for that perfect Armani break at the cuff and the scoop in the neckline to keep the bodice from creasing. The right fit makes you look and feel your best. You have taken the time, paid close attention to details and put forth the effort required to look and feel your best. The same is true of job satisfaction.

How can we personally ensure job satisfaction?

According to Timothy A. Judge, Ph.D., the sense of satisfaction an individual perceives from his or her occupation is primarily dependent upon that individual’s Core Self-Evaluation (CSE). The CSE is based on:

     1.     Self-esteem

    • High perception of self-worth

     2.     Internal Locus of Control

    • Sense of ability and control over life despite circumstances

     3.     Generalized Self-Efficacy

    • A measurement of one’s abilities to accomplish goals based on personal skills

     4.     Low Neuroticism

    • Having emotional stability in the work place

The stronger these elements are in an individual’s self-evaluation, the more likely that individual is to experience satisfaction from his or her career.

The Scenario – How do you know when you are satisfied with a delicious meal you have prepared? You are happy, fulfilled and pleased. You may savor the moment, congratulate yourself and share it with others. What about your workplace satisfaction?

How do you know when you are satisfied with your job?

The most commonly used definition for job satisfaction, developed by Edwin A. Locke, Ph.D., describes it as “…a pleasurable or positive emotional state resulting from the appraisal of one’s job or job experiences.”

A research investigation conducted by Lise M. Saari, Ph.D., and Timothy A. Judge, Ph.D., distinguished the three elements that have the greatest influence on an individual’s perception of job satisfaction:

    1.     Disposition

    • A person’s general attitude influences his or her perception of job satisfaction

    2.     Culture

    • An individual’s culture plays a major part in developing his or her identity in regards to that individual’s sense of individualism, which influences perception of job satisfaction

    3.     Work Situation

    • People evaluate job satisfaction based on the challenge their work poses and the amount of interest they take in the work they do

The Insight – You know that you are satisfied with your job when your roles, influences, and challenges leave you with pleasurable or positive emotions. However, pay close attention to your personal attitude toward yourself in reference to your role in the company and the challenges you are presented with. Be sure to take time to praise and celebrate your own accomplishments by highlighting your strengths and attributes.  Increasing personal appraisal can also increase job satisfaction.
